Many Americans, actually 20% in fact, struggle with canker sores. Still more, if your parents had canker sores, you are 90% likely to get them as well. If you are female, you are twice as likely to get canker sores as men are. This all seems incredibly unfair and painful.

Canker sores can last from 10 days to months and leave scarring even after the canker sores have healed. We know that the pain from canker sores can prove to be frustrating, especially when they hinder eating, sleeping, and talking.

Did you know that your toothpaste’s ingredients could be irritating the canker sores? We feel that no person should have to struggle with canker sores because of wanting good dental hygiene.

The team at Homestead Market has selected six products that can help you find relief from Canker Sores.

  1. - 1.5. Squigle® Enamel Saver® Toothpaste with Flouride & Tooth Builder® Toothpaste

Both of these toothpastes are mouth friendly and free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (SLS) and other ingredients that can irritate canker sores including cocamidopropyl betaine, tarter control agents, and bleaches. These two canker-sore-friendly toothpastes have 36% Xylitol by weight which inhibits the growth of plaque.

Did you know that plaque secretes irritating acids, which may trigger canker sores? So, less plaque means fewer canker sores.

Squigle® Enamel Saver® has a mild mint flavor that helps prevent the irritation of delicate tissues, and it contain fluoride.

Tooth Builder® is flavor free and fluoride free.

We recommend brushing with either of these toothpastes twice daily. If you are switching from an over-the-counter or store brand, we would recommend trying the Squigle® Enamel Saver® first as it is most like your traditional toothpaste. However, because of being SLS free, these toothpastes do not “foam” like traditional toothpaste.

  5.  DenTek Canker Cover® Canker Sore Patch

Canker Covers are tablet-like patches that are made from edible ingredients. These canker sore relief patches stick to any canker sore within a few seconds to form a clear, gel patch that lasts between 8 to 12 hours. The patch acts a protective barrier and blocks the canker sore from irritants like braces, drinks, foods, etc., while at the same time releases nutrients that help to heal the canker sore.

These patches have a natural mint flavor and a single patch will help treat most canker sores. The active ingredient is Menthol, which is an oral pain reliever.

How to Use: Pat the canker sore dry with a tissue. Place the canker cover patch on a clean, dry finger with the white side up. Next, place the white side on the sore and hold it in place for about 20 seconds. Some discomfort may occur within the first few minutes, but subsides quickly, followed by hours of relief that many find soothing. You can expect that within 30 minutes of the application, the tablet will form a clear, gel-like bandage that seals and helps protect the canker sore. A person may use up to 3 patches per day. These patches are not recommended for children 5 years of age or under.
